Preparing reference images for drink bottles in CraftAR

Last Updated: 04 / 05/ 2016
This article applies only for Image Recognition Items. Cylindrical objects such as drink bottles are not recommended for Augmented Reality experiences.
Many eCommerce sites use Image Recognition to connect physical objects, such as Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), to their product page to deliver an online purchase.

Drink bottles are recognized best when represented by reference images depicting their characteristic labels rather than the entire bottle. The same principle applies to cans, but we find it most often on bottles of wine for instance.

Figure 5. Preparing the best reference image for recognizing a drink:
  1. example of a query image where the bottle should be correctly recognized;
  2. perfect reference image to accomplish such recognition; it depicts large uniquely textured bottle label;
  3. sub-optimal ref. image where the label covers relatively small part of the scene
  4. poor ref. image showing very small label.
